Uzbekistan Seeks to Develop Ferry Capacity for Caspian Cargo Transport

Uzbekistan is interested in creating its own ferry capacity for cargo transportation across the Caspian Sea, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said on Friday at a trilateral meeting with the National Leader of the Turkmen People, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in the Avaza National Tourist Zone.

According to the press service of the President of Uzbekistan, the meeting focused on expanding the throughput capacity of transport routes and developing modern logistics infrastructure, including the ports of Turkmenbashi and Baku. The sides also discussed coordinated tariff policies, digitalization of procedures, and strengthening cargo control.

The Uzbek side expressed readiness to reduce transportation tariffs on a reciprocal basis to ensure more favorable access to major markets. It was emphasized that a consolidated approach would help build cooperation with states and international organizations ready to support the development of logistics in the region.

In the energy sector, the discussions covered strengthening cooperation and developing export corridors. Special attention was given to prospects for supplying green energy to Europe, as well as potential cooperation in geological exploration and development of fields on the Caspian shelf.

Cargo transportation across the Caspian Sea is an important part of the international logistics network, linking Central Asia, Iran, Russia and the Caucasus. According to forecasts by the Eurasian Development Bank, the volume of transport along this corridor could reach 25–32 million tons by 2030.
