Turkmenistan Reaffirms Commitment to Energy Supply Diversification

Turkmenistan views its neutral status as a key instrument for advancing its policy of diversifying energy export routes, as stated by Esen Aydogdyyev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Russian Federation, in an article published on August 6, 2025, in the Russian journal National Defense.
According to the diplomat, the country places a strong emphasis on the geoeconomiс dimension of neutrality, particularly in the context of expanding energy exports. Turkmenistan’s neutral status, serves as an additional guarantee that its energy exports remain outside the influence of political blocs and sanctions.

Aydogdyev highlighted that Turkmenistan’s resource potential and strategic geographic location create favorable conditions for strengthening regional and interregional energy cooperation. The country advocates for equal access by partners to hydrocarbon resources and related infrastructure—an approach it considers essential to maintaining energy balance across the Eurasian continent.

The ambassador referenced major infrastructure projects already implemented, including the Turkmenistan–China and Turkmenistan–Iran gas pipelines. He also stressed the strategic importance of the ongoing TAPI (Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India) pipeline project, which forms a vital component of Turkmenistan’s long-term strategy to open up new export markets. The project is supported by all participating countries and international financial institutions, including the Asian Development Bank.

According to Turkmen media, Turkmenistan’s proven natural gas reserves exceed 50 trillion cubic meters, placing the country fourth in the world after Russia, Iran, and Qatar.
