Traditionally, in mid-summer, specialists from the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna inspect wild nut thickets to assess their condition and fruiting, and forecast yields.
As reported in the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper, a multi-day expedition was carried out on the Badkhyz Upland, which is located between the Tejen and Murghab rivers on the territory of the Serkhetabad etrap of the Mary velayat (southeastern part) and the Serakhs etrap in the south of the Ahal velayat.
Here, biologists regularly study two large pistachio forests located in relatively close proximity to each other. To the east of the Kushka River is the Serkhetabad (Kushkinskaya) grove, and to the west of it, 120 kilometers away, is the Pulkhatinskaya grove (part of the Badkhyz State Nature Reserve). The total area of these two massifs is about 75,000 hectares. All these areas are protected by the state as a unique segment of the world of wildlife, plant diversity, and genetic resources of the country.
In order to conduct a visual inspection of the huge area, each participant in the field trip had to walk about 20 or more kilometers every day, and travel by car. In total, almost ten thousand hectares were inspected, within which average and low yields were noted due to the peculiarities of this year's natural phenomena. In Badkhyz, heavy rainfalls occur in the spring, as well as squally winds and hail, affecting plant vegetation and reducing the prospects for harvest.
After a short rest, the scientists went to the other end of the country to check the condition of the walnut in the vegetation cover of the mountainous area of Syunt Hasardag. Here they plan to visit the territories belonging to the State Nature Reserve of the same name, as well as the forestry enterprises of the Bakharden etrap of the Akhal and Makhtumkuli etrap of the Balkan velayats, where there are walnut groves.
The annual measure of biodiversity accounting, inspection of natural areas, natural monuments, including pistachio savannah forests during the ripening of nuts, contributes to the accumulation of data for comparative analysis, assessment of the state of the country's natural resources, the level of viability of ecosystems, the source notes.
