Turkmenistan Presents Renewable Energy Projects in Brussels

With the support of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), a working visit of delegations from the Central Asian countries was held in Brussels, focusing on sustainable energy development, exchange of best practices, and strengthening regional cooperation. The initiative was implemented within the framework of the EU4SustainableCentralAsia: Renewable Energy in Central Asia (EURECA) project, supported by the European Union and the Federal Republic of Germany. The programme included thematic meetings, technical visits, and a regional dialogue on energy policy.

The Turkmen delegation included three representatives of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan. The delegations from Central Asian states were represented by heads and deputy heads of relevant ministries and agencies, as well as technical experts.

On 10 October, the GIZ Brussels Representation hosted a dialogue of the heads of the energy sectors of the Central Asian countries, with the participation of representatives from the EU and GIZ. The meeting’s agenda focused on building consensus on renewable energy priorities and regional electricity trade, as well as discussing practical steps toward strengthening cross-border cooperation, harmonizing market approaches, and preparing joint statements for the future.

Alongside the heads of energy ministries from the Central Asian countries, Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Kingdom of Belgium Sapar Palvanov delivered a welcome address at the opening of the dialogue. In his remarks, the Ambassador emphasized Turkmenistan’s dual responsibility as an energy power — to ensure stability and security of energy supply in the region, while also meeting climate commitments and advancing clean energy. He outlined the country’s strategic and regulatory framework and provided practical examples, including the completion of a 10 MW hybrid solar–wind power plant and preparations for the launch of a 300 MW solar power plant, with active interest from international partners. He also noted progress in the development of wind energy and the implementation of smart energy solutions, particularly in Arkadag City. The Ambassador placed special emphasis on human capacity building and practice-oriented cooperation programmes with GIZ.

In parallel, the Global Gateway Forum 2025 was taking place in Brussels, featuring sessions on scaling up flagship Global Gateway projects, including the expansion of hydropower potential in Central Asia. The Turkmen side was represented at this session by officials from the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, and the Embassy of Turkmenistan in the Kingdom of Belgium. The participants took part in sectoral discussions with European partners and international financial institutions on the preparation and scaling of green projects, including regional hydropower and modernization of grid infrastructure.

The Embassy of Turkmenistan in Belgium expresses its gratitude to GIZ and the EURECA project team for their professional organization of the visit of Central Asian delegations to Brussels and for the substantive content of the programme.
