Turkmenistan Reaffirms Environmental Commitment at Forum in Altai Republic

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Nokerguly Atagulyyev reaffirmed the country’s commitment to environmental diplomacy and sustainable development during his speech at the International Environmental Forum held in the Altai Republic, Turkmen state media reported on Friday.

Atagulyyev emphasized Turkmenistan’s active participation in key international environmental agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the U.N. Convention to Combat Desertification, and CITES — the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

As part of its environmental policy, Turkmenistan has planted more than 162 million trees over the past two decades and expanded its network of protected natural areas. The country now has nine nature reserves and 16 wildlife sanctuaries. Turkmenistan is also implementing water-saving technologies and supports the coordinated management of transboundary water resources.

In conclusion, Atagulyyev noted that Turkmenistan will mark the 30th anniversary of its status of permanent neutrality in 2025 and reaffirmed the country’s readiness to strengthen international environmental cooperation and promote sustainable responses to global challenges.
