Turkmenistan Elected to UN ECOSOC for 2026–2028 Term

Turkmenistan has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2026–2028 term. The decision was made on June 4, 2025, during the 75th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, as reported by the Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

ECOSOC is one of the UN’s principal bodies responsible for coordinating the organization’s economic and social initiatives, as well as those of its affiliated institutions. The council plays a central role in advancing the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental.

The council is composed of 54 member states elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms. Each year, 18 new members are elected on a rotating basis to replace outgoing members from the various regional groups.

Turkmenistan previously served on ECOSOC during the periods 2013–2015 and 2019–2021.
