Ashgabat has become the City of New Sports Opportunities of the CIS

Ashgabat has been declared the City of New Sports Opportunities of the Commonwealth. This decision was made on Friday, May 24, at a meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the CIS held in the Turkmen capital, with the aim of expanding sports cooperation between our countries.  At the same time, the heads of government instructed the Council for Physical Culture and Sports to develop a draft Action Plan for 2024–2025 aimed at implementing this initiative.

Turkmenistan regularly initiates and organizes major international sports competitions and forums in a wide variety of sports. Thus, in 2017, the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games were successfully held in Ashgabat.

In 2018, at the initiative of Turkmenistan, the UN General Assembly established World Bicycle Day, which is now celebrated annually on June 3. In the same year, the Amul-Khazar 2018 International Rally, the route of which ran along the route of the historical Great Silk Road, as well as the World Weightlifting Championships, were held with great success. In 2023, Turkmenistan hosted the XIV World Kurash Wrestling Championship, and in 2024, the International Ice Hockey Tournament.

In recent years, Turkmenistan has intensified its participation in sports cooperation between the Commonwealth countries. On October 14, 2022, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, at a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS, made a proposal to hold the Friendship Games with the participation of athletes from the CIS states and other countries who expressed a desire to take part in them. Currently, this initiative is under consideration by the Council for Physical Culture and Sports of the CIS Member States, in whose work representatives of Turkmenistan have also been participating since 2023, according to the website of the CIS Executive Committee.
