Turkmenistan and Iran on Monday held a joint meeting at the Lotfabad border terminal to discuss transport and customs cooperation. The sides reviewed measures aimed at simplifying cargo movements and expanding cooperation along border routes.
According to Iran’s IRNA news agency, the meeting brought together representatives of Turkmenistan’s transport sector, the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen Logistics Association and the country’s border service.
The agenda included adjustments to traffic flow schemes, the introduction of two-lane traffic in the border zone and steps to boost passenger transportation through the land crossing.
The Iranian side noted steady growth in cargo turnover over the past three years and stressed the need to increase the checkpoint’s capacity to reach a target transit volume of up to 20 million metric tons.
Representatives of the border services of Turkmenistan and Iran also held talks in Sаrakhs, reaching agreements to increase cargo transit volumes through the Sаrakhs border crossing.
