Iran is actively holding discussions with Russia and Turkmenistan on the possibility of importing natural gas, Deputy Oil Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Saeed Tavakkoli said at a press conference. The announcement was reported on Monday by Turkmenistan’s official media.

According to Tavakkoli, Iran faces a gas shortage during the winter months that could reach 300 million cubic meters per day — and up to 350–400 million cubic meters at peak times. In response, the country is implementing programs to reduce the deficit and improve gas supply efficiency.

Despite high domestic demand, Iran plans to maintain its export volumes at last year’s levels. Gas exports to Turkey will continue through 2026, and negotiations are underway to extend current agreements.

Iran holds the world’s second-largest proven natural gas reserves, approximately 34 trillion cubic meters, and produces more than 1 billion cubic meters of gas per day from 22 fields.
